Change Internet Explorer (IE) Security Settings to Enable JavaScript

As discussed in a previous post some of the Internet Explorer (IE) security settings can be frustrating at times. To enable JavaScript open the Tools menu (Alt + X) and click Options.

Next, click on the Security Tab and click on the Internet (the image of the globe) and then click the Custom Level button.

Afterwards, scroll to the Scripting section and click Enable right below the Active scripting option.

Finally, click Ok on to close each of the windows.

Change Internet Explorer (IE) Security Settings to Enable File Downloads

The security restrictions in Internet Explorer may be understandable but at times they can be extremely frustrating and tedious to change. One such setting is the blocking of File Downloads. To change the File Downloads setting open the Tools menu (Alt + X) and click Internet Options.

Next, click on the Security Tab and click on the Internet (the image of the globe) and then click the Custom Level button.

Afterwards, scroll to the Downloads section and click Enable right below the File download option.

Finally, click Ok on to close each of the windows.

In-place upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise without Media

If you need to upgrade a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to either the Enterprise, or Datacenter editions you can use the installation image and choose the Upgrade option or the new command-line utility, introduced in Windows Server 2008 R2, DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management). With DSIM it is possible to perform the upgrade online, without the need to reinstall Windows or have the installation image.

To perform the upgrade in-place online, without the media image, first open an elevated command prompt (run as administrator) on the server to be upgraded.
Type the command DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition. This will display the current Windows version.

Type the command DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions to list the Windows editions to which this server can be upgraded.
Type the command DISM /Online /Set-Edition: <TargetEdition> (replace <TargetEdition> with the syntax for the desired edition returned by Get-TargetEditions).
If you receive a message (Error 87) indicating that you need to specify a product key you can include it with the /ProductKey: parameter
If you receive a message (Error 50) indicating that Setting an Edition is not supported then the machine may be a Domain Controller (DC) and it must be demoted before performing an online upgrade. You do not need to demote it if you are using the installation image.

As always, be certain that you back up all of your settings and data prior to performing the upgrade.

Regsvr32: “LoadLibrary failed – The specified module could not be found”

During a recent deployment I had had an issue with the registration of a DLL.  Part of the deployment process included the registration with RegSvr32. On one computer the registration failed with the error “LoadLibrary failed – The specified module could not be found”.  This error was a bit troublesome as the installation process was previously successful on several other computers. I verified the path was correct, the library existed, permissions were correct and more.

I used Process Monitor to trace the activity, filtered on the Regsvr32 process, and noticed that a dependent library was missing. Process Monitor indicated, in the list, the specific file that was not found. In the end I copied the missing library to the computer and the registration was successful.

Edit those XML files

Wow! It has been a while since my last post. It doesn’t feel like it has been that long. Things have been both hectic and busy (to say the least). I am going to try and make it a point to post more often (again).

Over the past few months I have had the need to maintain a number of different XML files. Along with storing application settings and configurations, XML files are also great for database data transfer. XML files are simple and easy to use and they are even easier if you have the right tools. One such tool, that I use frequently is XML Notepad 2007. XML Notepad 2007 is a simple application that allows for the editing of XML documents. It has a drag and drop interface that is fairly intuitive. If you find yourself managing XML files add this free application to your tool library.
